What inspection variables should be evaluated?

Establish a stable grating image before interpreting surface changes. The projected pattern itself must not become a false defect.

What lighting geometry fits this inspection task?

Patterned illumination uses changes in a reflected pattern to examine surface shape. Stable viewing angle and part pose help distinguish pattern deformation from printed texture.

Oblique or low-angle lighting can darken a smooth background while allowing scattered light to reach the camera. Scratch visibility depends on direction, depth and illumination angle. Separate images from several directions may be needed.

Hold the part fixed and vary the light direction. Compare normal texture with actual defects rather than judging brightness alone. Check shadows, curved-surface highlights and motion blur. Repeat the test at production speed and across the permitted position variation before choosing a layout.

Before choosing a configuration?

For selection, specify the field of view, smallest target feature, height variation, cycle time and installation space. Use the specific product page and drawing to verify electrical ratings, dimensions and compatibility.

Using reflected gratings for surface shape?

A grating reflected from a surface can reveal local changes in slope. Establish a clean reference pattern with the intended optical geometry before evaluating defects. The pattern's appearance depends on distance, focus and surface finish.

Compare shallow dents, creases and scratches at several orientations. Keep the raw images for inspection review. A distorted pattern indicates a change in reflection geometry; it does not by itself identify the defect type or depth.
