What inspection variables should be evaluated?
Lens-surface defects and outline measurement need different light paths. Define whether the task concerns scratches, thickness or edge position.
What lighting geometry fits this inspection task?
Backlighting separates an outline from its background and is a useful starting point for edges, holes and position checks. Confirm that the fixture leaves the optical path clear. Compare diffuse and collimated backlights, especially where curved or transparent edges change with viewing angle.
Keep the camera and lens fixed. Capture the centre and corners at the same exposure, then repeat at different part heights. Check edge profiles and position repeatability. A telecentric lens can reduce magnification changes within its specified range; calibration is still necessary.

Separating lens edges and surface defects?
Use silhouette imaging for outlines and an appropriate reflected or scattered-light arrangement for surface defects. Transparent and curved optics can redirect light into unexpected regions of the image.
Compare clean lenses with known chips, scratches and contamination. Move each sample through the allowed pose range. Check whether coatings and curvature change the contrast enough to require a separate lighting state.
